Fun Stuff To Do During Free Time

Hey guys, here's a place you can leave comments about stuff you hear is fun to do in New Orleans so people can get ideas of what to do when we're not volunteering.

Transportation

Once we get there, transportation will not be provided by Habitat for Humanity (HH) for us to the site. When I talked to the HH person on the phone, she recommended heavily against relying on the buses, especially as early as we need to be on site and she recommended either taking a cab or renting cars. If we rent cars, we could shuttle to the sites and split the cost.

Here's a list of rental places that give discounts for HH volunteers:

Cost & Food

So the major expenses for this trip will be the cost of the flights and the rest will be determined by personal selections for transportation once you're there, housing, food, and what you decide to do on your free time. I'm going to research low-cost options for those looking to keep the price on the lower side and hopefully keep things within everyone's budget.

We must bring our own lunch to the work site every day. Water will be provided on site but it is recommended that we bring a water bottle with us to fill up during the day. I'll be looking to coordinate lunches and water for those interested to keep it as convenient and low-cost as possible.

If you'd like me to pack a lunch for you and help split the cost, please let me know before July 10th, as well as any food suggestions or restrictions. Thanks!

Where!

With 7 votes, we have decided to volunteer for Habitat for Humanity in the Gulf Coast to help rebuild homes for those affected by Katrina. We will be working in the Musicians’ Village and are to report to the intersection of: N. Prieur and Alvar Sts. for our exact assignment.

When!

Monday, July 13 - Sunday July 19!
This would have us flying in July 13th so we could work from the 14th-18th and then fly back on the 19th. However, the only requirement is to volunteer one full day so if you can't come for the entire time or if you want to take a few days off to just hang out in New Orleans, that's okay too! (Just please let me know when you confirm which days you'll be joining us so I can register you accordingly.)

The volunteering work schedule is 7:45 AM to 3:15 PM on Tuesday through Saturday. The nice thing about this schedule is we'll start earlier in the day, when it should be a little cooler and then we'll be out in time to have free time at night which people can use to rest or go out to see some of the city and take in the amazing food and culture that New Orleans has to offer.
